Destination · Finland
Moving to Finland, The longest of the three, the cleanest paperwork, and a country that quietly suits the move.
Finland is the longest run of the three Nordic destinations, and almost always the easiest one to plan. Door-to-door transit is six-to-eight days, by Eurotunnel and Germany and Sweden, with the final leg by ferry across the Gulf of Finland from Tallinn. The customs work is straightforward — Finland is firmly inside the EU — and the buildings, by and large, were designed for the kind of furniture British movers tend to bring.
The country itself is small, in population terms, and the move flows are concentrated. Helsinki and the surrounding metropolitan area (Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen) take the bulk. Tampere is a quiet second. Turku and the western coast pick up the academic moves. The far north — Oulu, Rovaniemi — is rare and almost always quoted bespoke.
Bellereaux runs Finland moves with a single emphasis: the timeline. Roles in Helsinki, particularly in tech and research, often have hard August or January start dates. We map the schedule backwards from the start day, build in a buffer at the Tallinn ferry, and aim for a Sunday delivery so that Monday begins clean.
The route
6–8 days on the road
Eurotunnel · Germany · Sweden · Tallinn–Helsinki ferry
Most Finland moves take six-to-seven days door-to-door. Tampere and Turku add a day. The Tallinn–Helsinki crossing is reliable year-round but we add a half-day buffer in midwinter for ice-related delays.
Cities & regions
-
Helsinki
The bulk of our Finland work. Töölö, Eira, and Punavuori for established professionals; Kallio and Sörnäinen for younger movers; Lauttasaari and Kulosaari for families.
-
Espoo
The technology belt — Otaniemi, Tapiola. Family houses and modern apartment blocks. Easier access than central Helsinki.
-
Tampere
A two-hour run north from Helsinki. Quiet move pace, well-priced. Popular with academics moving to the university.
-
Turku
The western coast. We usually run Turku moves on the same trip as a Helsinki delivery, given the proximity.
-
Vantaa
The airport-belt and family suburbs. Easy access; we treat Vantaa moves as standard Helsinki-region work.
Seasonality
Finland moves are well-suited to autumn and spring deliveries. Midwinter (December–February) is fully workable but adds a buffer day for the ferry crossing. Midsummer week (last week of June) is a dead zone for the country generally; we avoid scheduling deliveries that week.
Customs & paperwork
Finland is inside the EU customs union. The paperwork is the lightest of the three Nordic destinations. We file the UK export declaration and the Finnish import declaration at Tallinn or Helsinki port; transfer of residence relief is available and routine for genuine relocations.
Things to think about
Before the survey, three honest questions.
- No. 01 Whether the move falls around an academic start date — late August and early January are the busiest weeks for Helsinki and Espoo deliveries.
- No. 02 Sauna access on delivery day, in older Finnish flats — sometimes the building sauna shares plumbing with the kitchen we are unpacking into.
- No. 03 Bicycle and outdoor equipment — Finnish life is more outdoor than UK life, and the move benefits from including the gear that supports that.
